Girls Sport At Uj
Posted by H TullettWhilst the weather caused imense interruptions in the first half of term, resulting in the cancellation of the remaining netball matches, the term was deemed a success with the girs playing competitive hockey matches for the very first time.
A number of matches were played with 3 wins, 1 draw and 5 losses being the final outcome. Wins were had in all age groups, U9, U10 and U11. The girls were enthusiastic and commited and played with spirit and determination against Schools with a long tradition in hockey.
House netball took place where all girls in Yr5 & 6 participated and Longcross were the runaway winners. A very closely fought competition for the remaining places happened between Radnor, Norwood and Esher. An U11 team travelled to Hoe Bridge to participate in a tournament finishing in 5th place out of 11 teams.
The House XC event took place in early February and all UJ pupils ran with Rador being crowned winners. Claremont hosted the Annual Elmbridge XC Championships and three Claremont teams finished in 3rd place - U9 Boys, U10 Boys and U11 Girls. Kristie Nanson was the winner of the U11 Girls race.
Next term sees the return of Rounders and hopefully plenty of sunshine!

Slime
Posted by Mrs Casey
Rebecca On the 24th November 2009 year three turned a liquid into a solid. There were two visitors one was called Moira and the other one was called Deborah.
Emily
They were from BP it stands for British Petroleum. Next we had to pair up so I grabbed Havana ….but gently… any way, she wanted to be my partner. Then Deborah told us to go to a table and on the table were big gynormous glasses. I looked a bit weird in them.
Hannah
We poured the water into the cup of glue and the glue stayed at the bottom until we stirred it.
Eniola
Once we had done that Deborah gave all of us a cup of borax. We were given another cup of water and another stick. We had to mix the water with the borax until it was all soggy.
Havana
We poured the water out leaving the soggy wet borax. We scraped the wet borax out of the cup and into the jar. We had to shake, shake and shake until we could see through the jar.
George
When our ‘goo’ was ready we took the lid off and put some gloves on because if we did not have any gloves on we could get a reaction.
Axel
Then we had a contest and whoever made their slime the longest would get one house point. I congratulate Finlay and Matias because they won the competition. But I also congratulate the whole of year three for trying their best.
Francois
My best part was shaking the borax, glue and water in the jar, it was really one of my best days in year three. I really enjoyed it.

U10 Netball Tournament
Posted by H TullettOn Wednesday 18th November, a Claremont U10 netball team travelled to Guildford High School for their annual tournament.
Competition was fierce with 14 school participating. Claremont played six matches in the preliminary round and the majority of scores were too close to call until the final whistle was blown. Claremonts biggest defeat was against eventual tournament winners Barrow Hills. Preliminary round results were as follows:
CFC v Danes Hill (lost 2-1); CFC v GHS 'B' (lost 3-1); CFC v Downsend (lost 3-2); CFC v Queen Eleanor (won 3-2); CFC v Barrow Hills (lost 8-1); CFC v St. Ives (lost 4-0)
In the play-offs, Claremont met GHS 'A' team which proved too strong with CFC losing 4-1.
These tournaments are essential for the girls to gain competitive match experience, reinforce skills learnt during lessons and gain confidence, proving that Claremont belonged and weren't out classed by the majority of teams present. Well done to those involved.

Claremont Vrs Tdsfc Adults Match
Posted by G J McGuire
At 2.30pm, the moment of no return had arrived. With boots laced up and shirts on, the Claremont dads and a few of the staff kicked off against Thames Ditton Schools Football Clubs dads. Both sides were evenly matched but also a little rusty for the first twenty minutes. Claremont enjoyed good possession without really troubling the keeper. Thames Ditton grew in confidence and scored the opening goal with a looping drive from distance which caught the wind and looped under the cross bar.
Thames Ditton soon had a chance to go two nil up after their striker was brought down in the area. However, the following penalty kick ended up with a lost ball over the fence! As half time Claremont were 1-0 down with all to play for.
The second half was hard work for Claremont as we had to defend against Thames Ditton pressure. After 60 minutes as the legs tired and the gaps opened, we conceded a second which was well finished off the post. Their third goal came late on to finish us off.
The final whistle was a welcome relief to all but ended an enjoyable match which was played in good spirit. There is already talk of a rematch in the spring. A big thank you to all the dad's involved and TDSFC for helping match this match possible.

Netball Results
Posted by H TullettAll the following matches were against Amesbury.
Wednesday 11th November:
U10 A won 3-2
It was a very competitive match with Claremont leading by only 1 goal for most of it. Heading into the final quarter the score was 3-1 in Claremont's favour with a physical and determined Amesbury scoring with a few minutes to go.
U10 B lost 14-1
It was the B team's first outing and an enjoyable game was had by all. This match gave the players an opportunity to experience competition and realise areas for further development in preparation for future matches.
Thursday 12th November
U9 A lost 6-2
It didn't rain, but it poured from the minute the minibus pulled into Amesbury's car park. It was a dark experience with the court boundary lines being difficult to see. Claremont trailed by only a couple of goals for most of the match, but in the end the home team used their advantage to gain a comfortable victory. Claremont didn't give up and fought until the very end scoring a goal in the final 3 minutes.
U9 B drew 0-0
The B team experienced better fortunes with their match being played inside away from the wind and rain. The match was competitive with both teams having many attempts at goal but with little success. An enjoyable first match for the girls.
Wednesday 18th November
U11A lost 19-1
A very tough match against a very determined Amesbury on home soil. The girls were short of a few regular players and were thankful to those who stepped in in order for the match to go ahead. The battle continued until the final whistle with Amesbury having the upper hand by being able to convert their attack towards the circle into goals.
U11B lost 7-0
Another tough first game of the season, but encouraging performances from which to build upon.

Book Week 2009
Posted by C Hale
Book Week 2009 was an exciting and memorable five days for the children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. There was plenty of time for reading and many children participated in the Sponsored Read, the proceeds of which provide educational and financial support for a child we sponsor in Africa. Our traditional ’Reading Assembly’ when everyone sits and reads in the Hall was a special favourite. The very popular children’s author, Caroline Lawrence, visited and had her audience enthralled by her anecdotes which have inspired her wonderful stories of ancient Rome. She gave the children some very useful hints on how to write exciting stories. After her visit, children were to be found everywhere engrossed in her stories and enjoying the DVDs of her books.
Pupils enjoyed entering various competitions which had been organised. The annual Book Fair was a great success, also the lunchtime ‘Book Swap’ organised by the Year 6 pupils and held in Mrs Hale’s classroom. The ‘Image Theatre Company’ returned to Claremont to present a performance of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ which was much enjoyed by all, particularly the pupils selected to perform with the actors. During the week each Year Group welcomed Jason Hall from the IT Department here at School, to read some of his own poetry to the children. Following this, pupils wrote some of their own poems or added an ending to his wonderful poem about King Bartholomew Tocket.
Teachers and children alike dressed up as Book Characters and paraded in Assembly and on Friday we all assembled in the Hall to look at all the photographs which had been taken during the week, to award prizes and to celebrate a great week.

Claremont Win The Battle
Posted by G J McGuireClaremont started brightly against Staines Prep and dominated the opening proceedings. Johan returned in goal but was comfortable against early chances from Staines Prep. Claremont raised their game in a five minute spell and dominated the midfield allowing Isaac space which he exploited to blast home two superb strikes. Staines Prep hit back immediately scoring two inside a minute to draw 2-2 by half time.
The second half again started well as Isaac hit blasted the third for Claremont to complete his third hatrick of an impressive season for him. Staines soon hit back again to tie the scores 3-3. Claremont rallied well and after good work from James and Nathan in defence, the ball fell to Isaac who raced clear and finished with some style to regain the lead. Staines Prep pushed us all the way but we tackled hard and kept their chances to long range efforts.
The score ended 4-3 to Claremont.

The Future Is Bright
Posted by G J McGuire
Claremont Under 11B headed to Denmead with the youngest team in the competition. We had five U10s and two U9s representing our school at U11s. Many teams against were a little surprised by how small we were but little did they know how big our hearts were!
In the first game we battled hard against Denmead C but lost 1-0 after a loose pass was snapped up. We drew the next two games including a draw against Denmead B team where Tomas was in fine form in goal. Next up was Bishopsgate. Al linked up well with Isaac who scored our first goal to secure our first victory. Ashton House was our final match. The boys had now gelled and with Harry K. and Harry S. in defence we looked strong. After the Bishopsgate game we had a big audience for the last match. Jack was again superb in midfield but it was Isaac who showed his class with a rasping long range drive into the top corner. We battled hard until the final whistle and ended with a fine victory.
The boys ended up coming 3rd overall which was a fine effort considering we came with a young team aiming to gain experience but left looking forward to returning next year to challenge for the U11A title. Well played boys and thank you for the fine support from parents!

Fun With Forces
Posted by Helen Attenborough
Year 4 have enjoyed finding out about forces. We have carried out several investigations, which have included trying to pick up oil covered jelly cubes with chopsticks (finding out about frcition!) and designing parachutes to slow down the speed at which a cork will fall to the ground.
Here is what some of the children had to say:
Tanja and Scott:'We learnt that the wider an object is the slower it will go'
Alex, Sam and Claudia: ' It was exciting and we were anxious to know who was going to win.'
Joe: 'It was fun!'

Girls Finish 3rd In Tournament. Netball Season Gets Underway.
Posted by H TullettTuesday 29th September was the start of the Netball season. The U10A team travelled to Ripley Court for a Tournament which included a touring Trinidad and Tobago Team. The compeition was fierce with a number of teams falling fowl of the Trinidad and Tobago 'giants'. The match against Greenfield School resulted in a 0-2 loss, but Claremont pride reigned and a 2-1 win against Amesbury quickly followed. With the 'giants' still to play the girls were up for the challenge and a gallant fight began upon the umpire's whistle. Claremont raised their game and at half time the score was 1-0 to the 'giants'. The final whistle saw 4-0 on the scorers board with Claremont feeling the full effect of the Touring Team. Claremont finished 3rd overall and gained much needed match practice for what lays ahead. Well done to all those who played.
On Wednesday 30th September, U11A and U10A teams travelled to Feltonfleet School for a netball fixture. Feltonfleet have a strong netball tradition and two very competitive matches took place with the final scores being 6-1 in favour of Claremont U11 and 4-8 in favour of Feltonfleet U10. Congratulations to the U11 team.
The U9's played their fisrt ever netball match against established Feltonfleet on Thursday 1st October. They all played with fighting spirit with the A team narrowly losing 4-3 and the B team losing 3-0. Much needed experience was gained that will stand them in good stead for future matches.

U9s Vrs Thames Ditton Fc
Posted by G J McGuire
U9A Twelve goal thriller
Claremont U9s kicked off the new season against unfamiliar opposition in front of a big crowd at KGS playing fields. We were soon 1-0 down after an early soft goal but the boys rallied and scored a fine team goal to equalise through Harry before taking the lead through Alex from the half way line!
Unfortunately, we sat back and Thames Ditton hit back quickly to take the lead 3-2 before Isaac powered home. The fun did not stop there as Thames Ditton hit two more before the break leaving us 5-3 down at half time.
A tactical swap at half time saw our influential captain Isaac drop into midfield with Amin taking the striking birth. A slow start to the second half saw us concede a sixth goal from a break away. With both sides tackling hard, the game tightened up before Claremont began a remarkable come back. Isaac hit two more for his hattrick to leave the score 6-4 with minutes to go. A rousing finale followed with Claremont pressing forward until Amin calmly slotted home to tie the score 6-6 and honours even at the close.
U9B A brave win vrs Thames Ditton FC
The U9B team began well and matched their strong opponents. The boys worked hard to keep Thames Ditton at bay. Ollie who took the gloves moments before kick off grew in stature as the game progressed and kept our goal safe. Thames Ditton had their chances but Claremont lead by James looked resolute in defence and held on until half time with the scores tied 0-0.
The second half followed with the same passion as before. Finlay came on as a half time substitute alongside Axel and added plenty of energy. Both in Year 3 flew into challenges and gave everything to the cause. Claremont grew in belief and with the defence now more assured looked to break whenever possible. Scott was involved in everything and helped in a break away which lead to James striking the ball through the goalkeepers legs to send the Claremont crowd crazy. The dying minutes were tight but we held on to take a 1-0 victory. Well played boys, especially as a number were making their school debuts.

Claremont Make The Final
Posted by G J McGuire
On Wednesday 23 September, the U10 five-a-side football team set off for the Twickenham Prep tournament full of excitement. Upon arrival the sheer size of some of the teams was rather daunting as 18 teams prepared themselves for kick off. However, Claremont did not need to worry as the U10A completed the group stages beating Bishopsgate and St Philips comfortably on the way.
The reward for topping the group was a semi-final against a strong Denmead Boys Prep team. We conceded our first goal but showed great courage and team spirit to bounce back immediately and take the game to extra time. Isaac struck the golden goal to put us through to the Final against the host team Twickenham Prep School.
However it was one step too far as we tired towards the end and lost 0-3. The U10A finished second overall and took medals home for the second year in a row. The boys were a fine example to Claremont Upper Junior School and wore their medals with pride. Well done boys, especially Jack, our inspirational captain.

Aeschylus The Greek Visits Year Five
Posted by Belinda Grove
The children in Year Five enjoyed a daylong Greek workshop run by Aeschylus (also known as The History Man – Ashley Holt). It was an excellent interactive day where the children dressed up as Athenians or Spartans, learnt how to fight in Greek formation, handled Ancient Greek toys and learnt many interesting facts about Ancient Greece. Even Mr Ford dressed up as a Spartan warrior and he certainly appeared very fierce when ready for battle against the children! Ashley passed on his immense knowledge in a fun and entertaining way and the children gained a great deal from the experience. The day certainly scored 10/10 with all the children.
