Curriculum

The Early Years classes (Nursery and Reception) follow the ‘Early Learning Goals’. These provide the basis for well-structured and stimulating programmes of study, firmly rooted in practical activities which are relevant to the children. They develop key learning skills such as listening, speaking, concentration, persistence and working together. They also develop early communication, literacy and numeracy skills.

At Key Stage 1 the syllabus follows the National Curriculum guidelines. We expect attainment to be beyond the national levels. Learning continues to allow children to work at length and in depth and to begin to develop independence. To enable each to reach their full potential, maths and some literacy work is done in ability groups within each year level. There is a clear structure to the way these subjects are taught. Children develop the necessary skills in reading, writing and number to enable them to be applied to creative work and problem solving.

Cross-curricular topics begin to broaden the children’s understanding of their local and wider environments (Geography), a sense of time (History), people’s beliefs and worship (Religious Education) and how and why things work and happen (Science). French is taught from Year 2. Art, Design and Drama are an important and integral part of the curriculum.

Music and PE are taught by specialist teachers in a well-appointed hall where assemblies and special events are also held.

Games are taught outside when dry and in the summer all children learn to swim in the Lower Junior swimming pool.
