Music (enriched Curriculum)

Instrumental/Vocal Teaching

The pleasures of success in learning a musical instrument are numerous and tuition is offered in the following instruments:

Violin, viola, violoncello, double bass, french horn, trumpet, trombone, bassoon, flute, clarinet, saxophone, recorder, harp, piano, singing, drum kit, electric guitar, classical guitar, bass guitar.

Instrumental/vocal lessons are rotated to ensure minimum disruption to the curriculum, with fixed times within the school day available for Year 11, Lower 6 and Upper 6 students.  It may be possible to organise fixed times for any year group before or after school.

There is an expectation that those learning instruments will take part in orchestras/windbands/ensembles and that those having singing lessons will sing in the choir or other vocal groups.  There will also be opportunities for individual performances in assemblies, informal evenings and more formal concerts.

Senior Orchestra

The Senior Orchestra is the School's premier instrumental ensemble.  It performs at a variety of School events during the year and at its own annual Symphony Concert.  The programme usually includes a Classical or early Romantic Symphony and a concerto featuring one or more soloists from the Orchestra.

Recent Concertos have included Bach's Violin and Brandenburg Concertos, Bruch's Violin Concerto no 1, Haydn's Violoncello Concerto, Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto and Mozart's Piano Concertos K466 and K467.  With the addition of symphonies by Beethoven, Haydn and Mozart, the orchestra has enjoyed a rich repertoire, culminating in a highly successful tour to Belgium.

Senior Choir

The Senior Choir (SATB) is open to all students in the Senior School, which results in a delightful collaboration of older and younger students.  The choristers are introduced to a varied repertoire, ranging from Church Masses and Motets in a variety of languages to arrangements of jazz and pop classics.

The choir performs at its own vocal concerts as well as other important events during the school year.

Rock/Pop Music at Claremont Fan Court School

The Music School prides itself on promoting music-making for all tastes.  Every 18 months or so, a Rock/Pop Festival is staged in which talented bands and solo vocalists drawn from all parts of the Senior School participate.  Against a background of special effects such as laser lights and smoke machines, the Claremont Rockfest features a wide range of music chosen by the students themselves: from melodious to metal.  A percentage of proceeds of this ever popular event is contributed towards the Sixth Form charity.
