An Introduction To Business Studies

"An empowered organisation is one in which individuals have the knowledge, skill, desire, and opportunity to personally succeed in a way that leads to collective organisational success." - M. Shawn Covey

“It is a rich course which allowed us the chance to develop our own skills in dealing with others and running an effective venture” - Tamsyn Nelligan, Former Year 11 Student

“Of all my subjects it is the one I feel will be most useful in the real world” - Sophie Perry, Head Girl

Reading a subject specification does not really give you an insight into what Business Studies is all about. Instead, what follows is a series of business situations, which our students are encouraged to analyse and discuss during the course. These give an insight into the true nature of the subject – coping with an ever changing business world.

Why does Nat West see it as a Unique Selling Point to have call centres in the UK?

Is the Co-operative Bank right to adopt an ethical stance when it could make far higher profits if it dealt with all types of countries and businesses?

Should the Government allow advertising of fast food before the watershed?

What effect would the Single Currency have on firms if the UK were to join?

Could the decline in the share price of Northern Rock have been avoided by more government intervention and financial accountability?

Success in taking decisions is the key factor which determines a business’s success. The course concentrates on how managers can take effective decisions and the information they need to make the right choices.

The A level course continues to be highly successful, with 4 students achieving 100% in recent external exams. It also continues to be hugely popular, with currently ¼ of the 6th form opting to study it, and 90% of those students choosing to continue Business into Higher Education.

With a recent successful trip to New York, appearences on BBC Newsnight and Newsround and the ever present Young Enterprise and 'Make your mark with a Tenner' competitions which allow the students to experience the ups and downs of running their own company, the future continues to look bright for Business Studies.
