Foundation, Mission and Ethos
Claremont Fan Court began from small but very significant foundations. The first families in the then separate girls’ school, Clear View, were Christian Scientists who wished to establish a school for their daughters that advocated the seeing of good in all inspired by the principles of Christian Science.
A few years later, several teachers who were Christian Scientists established Fan Court, a boys’ preparatory school in Chertsey. They chose ‘Be Strong’ as the School motto.
An early Fan Court Headmaster said: ‘We like to think of our boys as going out into the world feeling themselves greatly beloved of God, unafraid, at peace with themselves and their neighbours, and spiritually strong.'
The School has no formal connection with the Christian Science Church. Claremont Fan Court School is owned and run by an educational trust with charitable status.
Our Mission guides the ethos of the School and is a primary document for all who work at the School.
To provide an environment where the God-given potential of every individual is recognised and valued. With this recognition comes the expectation of high personal achievement and moral standards and a developing awareness of our individual responsibility to each other and our world.
To maintain a broad and forward-looking curriculum in which pupils are encouraged to think independently to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world.
To encourage our pupils to awaken to all that is good and true around and within them in their spiritual journey of self- discovery.
To equip our pupils with a strong set of values for future decision making.
The following values are fundamental to everything we do:
Love for God and man
To promote the role of the family by developing a strong interaction with the home.
The foundational principles of this School continue to guide the ethos. The purposes of the Claremont Fan Court Foundation include: to provide an education of the highest order; to promote an education founded upon a love of God and for His creation; to recognise the God given qualities and unlimited potential of every individual in the School; to lay a moral and spiritual foundation upon which individuals may build in order to become an influence for good in the world.
Character Qualities underpin the moral education at this School and contribute to the atmosphere of this School in which your child will thrive. These character qualities have been chosen so that teachers, staff and pupils alike can focus on these qualities and associated issues that will foster for debate, discussion, and application in our daily lives. Families are encouraged to discuss each month’s quality at home.
A love of goodness underpins this School. Teachers, staff, pupils and their families are expected to support and extend the atmosphere of respect, courtesy, and the love of learning and the value of friendship that is held dear at Claremont Fan Court School. This peaceful and purposeful intent extends throughout every lesson and into the pastoral and co-curricular activities we offer.
Our campus is sited on 100 acres of beautiful Grade 1 listed landscape. This spectacular setting, including the listed Mansion House and Stable Court building, further reinforces the opportunities we give our children for reflection on all that is good. That we have been co-educational on this site for over 30 years also supports the holistic approach to education we espouse. Having a religious foundation, but not being a faith school, encourages all at Claremont Fan Court School to live their ideals and not merely espouse them. The result is a gentleness, earnestness and innocence in each of our pupils that is supported and challenged by a fine and progressive staff of teachers who believe, and will insist, that children are capable of more than they think possible and that there can be no limit placed upon them. Excellent teaching, careful pastoral care, a broad co-curriculum supported by the latest ICT thinking, enables Claremont Fan Court School pupils to do well in all they attempt; to meet adverse circumstances as their master; to extend their talents in all the subjects they study and in the arts, sports, music, drama, activities they participate in.
Children leave Claremont Fan Court School prepared for university. They are confident, contributing and caring members of the global community and they have embraced the challenge of self education. They will have gained the values that will equip them to make a positive contribution and they will be a force for good in the world.
The School teaches to and beyond the National Curriculum. In religious education, lessons are multi faith in nature and study religious thought from the major world religions.
‘We are proud of the fact that our child has been at Claremont Fan Court School and have no hesitation in highly recommending the School. I believe it is one of the only schools in the area that is true to its convictions and really does strive to deliver, happy, well educated, well mannered and confident young people into society. You have certainly helped us achieve that with our child.’ Parent of leaving child
