Performing Arts

Music

There is a hive of musical activity in the Junior School. Specialist music teachers provide two lessons a week to each class, where children are given the opportunities to play a wide range of classroom percussion instruments and sing songs from a variety of genres and traditions. Keyboards are also used within Upper Junior lessons.

Every child is given the chance to perform in concerts and assemblies throughout the year. Both Lower and Upper Juniors enjoy very full choirs and recorder clubs as part of the musical enrichment.  AS well, in the Upper Juniors, rehearsals are held weekly for the ensemble group and chamber choir. Year 3 and 4 pupils have the unique opportunity to learn the violin, for no extra charge, with a specialist string teacher. Each child in the Junior School has the opportunity to perform in assembly in front of their peers. Year 6 children round off their time in the Junior School by putting on a musical production which is a highlight of the school calendar.

Pupils from both Lower and Upper Juniors may choose to have individual lessons on a range of instruments as well as voice.

Drama

Drama in the Junior School is an important part of the curriculum. All year levels have Drama lessons on a weekly basis which tend to complement the learning in class, in particular literacy and the humanities. Regular theatre trips are also organised and theatre companies come into school to enrich the children’s drama experience

Pupils perform before their peers and parents in assemblies and special productions during the year. Year Six pupils take part in a major musical production of high quality staged in the Joyce Grenfell Centre.
