U18 National Schools Lacrosse Tournament
4 March 2017
Congratulations to the Claremont Fan Court School Lacrosse first team who, after a series of strong performances, reached Division 1 at the National Schools Lacrosse Tournament held annually at the Surrey Sports Park.
The tournament, held over two days, welcomes schools from all over Surrey and stands as an event of high standard and calibre, representing a great challenge for those competing. Last year, the Claremont first team finished runners-up in Division 3, so to reach Division 1 this year is a fantastic achievement for the girls.
In the first round, the team faced tough opposition against Bedford, Wellington Girls’, Cheltenham Ladies’, Haberdasher’s Monmouth, LEH and Glenalmond College. However, impressive wins against both Wellington Girls’ (7-1) and Glenalmond College (3-1) placed Claremont in 4th position out of the 6 teams.
To the team’s disbelief, this saw them drawn into Division 1 going into the second day of the competition – a school record. The girls stepped up to the challenge with great enthusiasm despite being drawn against Wycombe Abbey (National Champions two years ago), Whittington Girls’ and Shrewsbury School. Amazingly, the team progressed into the final 16 of Division 1 after beating Whittington Girls’ (4-2) and Shrewsbury School (4-2).
The final match of the tournament was against Putney High who out-played Claremont 5-0, but the team were delighted with their overall placing within the competition.
“I cannot thank these girls enough for making my last year at Claremont so incredible and making me so proud as a Captain. We made history and Claremont Lacrosse first team are currently ranked in the top 25 nationally. We are up there with one of the best schools in the country and we deserved it, for we showed determination and never gave up. Good luck to the girls next year and I hope to see you in Division 1 again, challenging for the cup. Thank you to Che, Liddy, Amber, Annabel, Liz, Freya, Fia, Amy, Christin, Chloe, Sophie and George for being so incredible and a special mention to Miss Harfitt for pushing us and helping us become the team we are today.” - Lacrosse First Team Captain, Flo S
