Settling in to the Senior School

Pupils joining Year 7 are invited to attend an induction afternoon in July prior to the September of entry. During this afternoon, they are able to meet their form tutor and new classmates, and get to know the School site. Each Year 7 pupil is allotted a Year 11 mentor, a long practised system within the Senior School whereby older pupils guide and assist new entrants during their first months at Claremont Fan Court.

The day before term starts in September, Year 7 pupils and families are invited to join their tutors, Senior School staff and mentors for an afternoon barbecue. Year 7 also take part in a team building day during the first few weeks of term in order to encourage pupils to get to know each other. Each tutor group has a balance of pupils who have come from our own Prep School and new pupils who have joined us from one of many feeder schools.

Pupils joining the Senior School in Years 8 and 9 are allotted a buddy during their first few weeks in order to guide and support them as they integrate into School life. Heads of Year will also spend time with new pupils before they join their year group, discussing their timetable and personal organisation. 

Students joining the Lower Sixth have an induction day after the end of their GCSE exams in June which allows them to meet their future peers. The day consists of a mixture of social events off site (team building at the Surrey Outdoor Leisure site at Henley Fort in Guildford) and information about academic study. At the start of the Lower Sixth Year in September there are further events organised to ensure that all students settle in quickly. Each student joins a house based tutor group. The tutor teacher’s role is to help ensure a smooth passage into life in the Sixth Form through the use of a one to one interview every half term.

The pastoral staff at Claremont Fan Court place great emphasis on the importance of caring for others, individual responsibility and resilience and we aim to exemplify these values through our induction process.
